A mother humpback whale and her calf were discovered in the Gold Coast Seaway on Monday afternoon and had to be herded back out to sea by the Sea World whale watching boat.

Dr Olaf Meynecke, a whale expert from Griffith University, says it’s not uncommon to see them in the seaway but there are dangers if they’re not safely guided back out to sea.

Dr Meynecke’s tagging research shows more humpbacks are visiting coastal waters each year.
